Editor’s Note: In 2013, FACTS began to train speakers to provide the presentations we created to share the science of fertility awareness-based methods (FABMs) with medical professionals, students, and the public. We have equipped more than ninety speakers to share the FACTS in medical schools, residency programs, hospitals, clinics, nursing schools, universities, and communities throughout the United States and internationally.

This year, we have featured a FACTS-trained speaker monthly to highlight the diversity and depth of knowledge of our talented pool of experts. This month, we are delighted to feature Dr. Deidre Wilson, a family physician with a special interest and expertise in reproductive health and fertility care.

Meet Deidre Wilson, DO

Dr. Deidre Wilson is a family physician with a small private practice in Phoenix, Arizona focused on fertility care and NaProTechnology. She completed undergraduate studies in biomedical engineering at Arizona State University and received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree in 2002 from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. She then completed internship in 2003 at Mesa General Hospital.

Dr. Wilson is a trained Creighton Model medical consultant and earned the highest certification available for physicians using NaProTechnology. She is also certified as a SymptoThermal Method instructor. As a certified FertilityCare Medical Consultant for the Creighton Model, Dr. Wilson is able to employ a cooperative, non-destructive approach to fertility treatment and reproductive health.

In Her Own Words

It’s not every day you meet a physician who uses FABMs personally and professionally and, according to Dr. Wilson, one certainly enhances the other. “Charting my cycles helped me understand my fertility and PMS symptoms; this was helpful to me personally. I also found that training in the different methods is an incredible tool for me to use as a physician. It helps my patients become not only aware of but also better able to treat the underlying causes of their fertility concerns.”

While searching for resources to support her work as an educator, Dr. Wilson learned about FACTS. “After spending hours trying to research, create, and give my own presentations on FABMs to family medicine residents, I was delighted to discover FACTS. I think I have given almost every FACTS presentation currently available, primarily to medical students and healthcare professionals.” Her impact on medical education keeps expanding, as Dr. Wilson has already ‘shared the FACTS’ through live presentations in four states, including Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and Washington.

Dr. Wilson has taught hundreds of students, physicians, and other medical professionals about fertility awareness. Her favorite presentation to give is The Female Cycle as the 5th Vital Sign, although she feels like it is very advanced. She recounts an uplifting experience she had involving a member of the audience. “I had a medical student come up to me after the presentation and ask, ‘how can I become an FABM/Napro specialist like you? That’s exactly what I want to do!’” What a wonderful testament to her effectiveness as an educator and speaker!

The work of FACTS is particularly important to her in light of her experience as a student. She recalls, “When I attended medical school, I received minimal training regarding FABMs — I think one short slide, and it did not include modern methods. I had no idea that my interest in avoiding artificial contraceptives would lead me to a niche in reproductive medicine.”

Contributions to the Mission of FACTS

Dr. Wilson has been a FACTS-trained speaker for five years. In 2018, she joined FACTS’ executive director, Dr. Marguerite Duane, to give a series of presentations at a CME conference in Albuquerque, NM. “This highly successful conference was the precursor to all the other FACTS CME conferences that have followed,” explains Dr. Duane. She values the expertise Dr. Wilson brings to her presentations as a physician trained in several FABMs who incorporates fertility awareness into her medical practice.

As a speaker, Dr. Wilson presents in different venues to a wide array of audiences, including medical professionals, students, and patient groups. Recently, she presented at a medical school in Washington State, which provided a unique opportunity to educate students about FABMs during their OB/Gyn clinical rotation. Dr. Duane appreciates her ability to “draw on personal and professional experiences when presenting about the benefits and applications of FABMs,” which engages her audience and enhances their learning.

From online FACTS webinars and live presentations to small group discussions and presentations at large national conferences, Dr. Wilson is helping FACTS fulfill its mission to educate medical and health professionals about the science behind FABMs and their applications for women’s health. We appreciate how Dr. Wilson magnifies the voice of FACTS and are delighted to have her as a vital part of our speaker program.
