Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, the new name for polycystic ovary syndrome: a multistep global consensus process. Lancet. 2026 May 12:S0140-6736(26)00717-8. doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(26)00717-8. Epub ahead of print. PMID: 42119588.
Objective
To develop a new name for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) through an inclusive global consensus process involving patients, health professionals, and multidisciplinary stakeholders, and to establish recommendations for implementation of the new terminology in clinical practice, research, and public communications.
Conclusion
The consensus process concluded that the condition currently known as polycystic ovary syndrome should be renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) to better reflect its multisystem reproductive, metabolic, and endocrine features. The new terminology aims to reduce confusion and stigma associated with the previous name, improve clinical understanding, and support more accurate diagnosis, research, education, and patient care worldwide.
