John F. Brehany, PhD, STL

John F. Brehany, PhD, STL is executive vice president of The National Catholic Bioethics Center (NCBC).  Since 2015, he has focused on institutional ethics and led the NCBC’s Catholic Identity and Ethics Review (CIER) program, a comprehensive assessment program for Catholic health care institutions.

Dr. Brehany served as executive director of the Catholic Medical Association from 2006-2014 and as executive director of mission services and ethics for Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa from 2000-2006. Dr. Brehany has taught at Saint Louis University, the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, the University of Mary, and Mount Angel Seminary.

Dr. Brehany has published articles on a wide range of topics in health care ethics and appears frequently in Catholic media and podcasts. Dr. Brehany received a Ph.D. in health care ethics from Saint Louis University, a licentiate in sacred theology (S.T.L.) from the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, and a master’s degree in philosophy (M.A.) from the University of St. Thomas in Houston.
