Enroll in Our Resident Elective

Want to learn more about FABMs?

FACTS now offers an elective for medical residents to learn more about modern Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABMs), the evidence for their effectiveness for family planning, and their role in women’s health. Through online lectures, live case study discussions, virtual and/or in person appointments with physicians and other medical professionals, and readings, this course will explore the broad applications of modern FABMs and their role in pregnancy prevention, infertility, and women’s health. Because each residency program is different, please work with your program to provide the necessary documentation to enroll and earn credit, if needed.

Our resident elective program expands on the experience of our student elective and can be tailored to each participant’s unique needs and experience, depending on background knowledge and availability. The didactic content consists of lectures included in our 10-part CME course, which is provided at a discounted rate to residents. The clinical component matches residents to an elective mentor who is a physician trained in FABMs and incorporates them into their practice. Residents work closely with their mentor to see patients, assist in clinical care, and develop content for grand rounds, research presentations, and case study discussion. Visits can be completed in-person, virtually, or both, depending on the practice and the mentor.

The resident elective equips the next generation of rising healthcare professionals to meet the needs of their patients and provide an additional tool to enhance patient care outcomes. Residents have the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and experience specifically related to FABMs in clinical practice, building on skills they have learned through the FACTS student elective and/or CME course content. They may also participate in additional medical consultant training through NeoFertility, FEMM, or NaPro Technology, so that they can learn the protocols and treatment options that follow a restorative reproductive medical approach. Coupling this component of training and individualized mentorship with an assigned preceptor prepares the resident to have the skillset and expertise to practice women’s health using modern FABMs and restorative reproductive medicine (RRM), to ultimately help their patients. Residents are also encouraged to attend the CME office hours held every month from September to May to discuss patient cases, receive tips to incorporate RRM and FABMs into clinical practice, and pursue opportunities to connect and learn together, both with other residents and practicing clinicians. This course can be done longitudinally or in a block (whether two weeks or six months, etc.).

Medical residents at any accredited program are encouraged to learn more.

What participants have to say about the FACTS resident elective…

I have spent the last two years working closely with Dr. Duane, seeing patients with her in person and via telemedicine. As opposed to during the medical student elective where you may see different patients just one time and thus see a snapshot of their overall care, during my resident elective time I have seen patients in follow up multiple times and have not only gotten to know them as people but also have gotten to see how their menstrual cycle chart has changed with the implementation of restorative reproductive medicine. This experience has been invaluable to me as a family medicine resident. – Kate, family medicine resident

It has been a highlight of my final year of residency to work with Dr. Duane during this residency elective. Her dedication to her patients and mentees is unparalleled and I am so grateful for this opportunity. I was able to spend a week working with her in person as she made house calls to her patients. During the week, I learned the foundations of fertility awareness based methods and saw firsthand how they can be applied in a clinical setting…. It has transformed how I approach my patients – whether they are hoping to conceive, [wanting to] avoid conception, going through menopause, or anything in between. I feel much more equipped to provide the support my patients deserve thanks to this residency elective. Louisa, family medicine resident
