FACTS members spent the last week working hard in Phoenix; exhibiting with the FMEC, giving research presentations, training new speakers in our Phoenix Speaker program and connecting interested members. Read through for a more detailed update on what we’ve been up to!
The STFM Conference on Medical Student Education
Last weekend, FACTS presented and exhibited at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Conference on Medical Student Education in Phoenix, AZ.
FACTS co-founder Dr. Marguerite Duane staffed the Family Medical Education Consortium (FMEC) booth and, despite a severe case of laryngitis, shared information with interested physicians and students about both our parent organization, the FMEC, and FACTS.
FACTS Student Ambassador Erin Adams (Georgetown, MS-2) presented two talks to interested audiences at the conference. The talks covered recent research completed by FACTS students members on:
- Medical Student interest in FABMs, and
- An Online vs. Live FABM Class Comparison.
There were many great questions from an engaged audience, including one physician who commented:
“This is treating women like they have a brain, instead of telling them they can’t understand their biology”
And, well, we think he has a point.
Friday evening FACTS hosted an informational event, inviting locals to come learn about our organization in a casual environment. We had several local doctors and fertility educators attend, asking great questions and providing helpful feedback as we expand across a wider area.
FACTS members also hosted a breakfast table discussion group on Saturday morning to discuss FABMs more in depth with interested students. Overall, it was a positive experience. Physician interest in learning about FABMs, especially towards medical management, is slowly increasing and we thank the FMEC for allowing us to be a part of this conference.
Speaker Training in Phoenix, AZ
In addition to attending the STFM conference, FACTS also held a Speaker Training workshop in downtown Phoenix. Ten new speakers were trained from across North America at the first training out west. Our program has now trained 43 FACTS Speakers from across 19 different states, DC, and Canada. While we have had international members for a while now, the FACTS Speaker Program has officially gone international!
Please considering inviting a speaker to come speak for an audience near you. Look for our next Speaker Training in Pittsburgh, Fall 2016!
We are excited that FACTS is expanding our outreach in 2016. Thank you for joining us!
